Akagera national park is situated in the Eastern part of Rwanda along the Tanzanian border about 2-3 hour’s drive from Kigali city Rwanda’s capital and its largest city. Akagera national park covers an area of about 1,200 km². It was formed in 1934 to protect animals and vegetation in three eco regions: savannah, mountain and swamp. The park was named Akagera national park because of the Kagera River which flows along its eastern boundary feeding into several lakes the largest of which is Lake Ihema. Many highlands which are found in Rwanda provide stunning views over the expanse of lakes and swamps. And Akagera has its fair share of mountainous terrain. And it is the largest protected wetland not only in the east but also in central Africa. The park is visited by very many tourists who flop in to view a wide variety of animal species including the big five such as lion, elephant, buffaloes, hippo, other small species include giraffe, hyena, bush buck, antelopes, and crocodiles can be seen in the Lake plus also various species of birds that feed on and around the lake.
Game drives are the major activities done at the park since the park is a home to over 300 species of wild life including the “THE BIG FIVE” such as lion, elephant, buffaloes, hippo, leopard together with other small species like the waterbuck, hyena, giraffe, zebra, among others. Watching these games in their natural setting is considered breathtaking and game drives can be arranged either in the morning or evening depending on the traveler’s interest
A trip to Lake Akagera national park is considered incomplete without enjoying a boat trip on the lake. This is a wonderful spot point to various species of animals that live and also feed on the lake such as school of hippos, crocodiles, a variety of birds that feed on and around the Lake such as the malachite kingfisher, the fish eagle, to mention but a few.
This is one of the most interesting activities done at the park most especially to those interested in fishing. Arrangements can be done for this activities, if interested you are advisable to come with your fishing equipment such as hooks, or you many hire them at the park headquarters or at the lodge. Most of the fish caught include tilapias.
In case one takes a trip to Akagera national Park, is expected to watch a variety of several species of birds that live in the savannah grassland of Akagera National Park. Akagera National Park is a home to over 524 bird species. Birders are in position to encounter the papyrus gonolek, shoebill stock, as well as migrant birds attracted by seasonal fluctuations in the water levels among others.
