The Nyungwe rainforest is also another tourist spot in Rwanda, it is located in the southwestern part of Rwanda bordering with Burundi to the south, and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The park was established in 2004 to protect primate species like chimpanzees which where hunted for by poachers for trade meet among other reasons. This park is regarded as the best preserved montane rainforest not only in the east but also in the central Africa covering an area of about970km2 of rain forest, swamps, bog and grassland. Nyungwe forest national park is one of the most visited national parks not only in the east but also in the central Africa. it houses over 13 species of primates including the most closest relative of man the chimps other primate species which the park houses include the black and white colobus, civet monkey, baboons, Angolan colobus monkey, owl-faced monkey, the white- bearded L’hoest’s monkey, the large troops of the acrobatic Angolan colobus monkey. All these species are fabulous species to watch as play in fruitful trees.

Not only primate species but also the park is a home to over 320 species of birds that reside in the Nyungwe forest to mention some include the great blue turaco, a stunning created bird, the Ruwenzori turaco, and the sun birds among others. The park also has a colorful range of orchids, moths, butterflies and other insects.


Chimpanzee tracking

Nyungwe forest national park is commonly known for chimpanzee tracking as this activity is regarded as breathtaking meeting our close relatives the chimps in their national settings is regarded as a moment in life that no one can ever miss out. Tracking these apes can take a half or full day as meeting them depends on where they spent the last night from, so some level of physical fitness is needed as meeting them may involve passing through the muddy and thick forest, but ounce these giants are met you strictly allowed staying with them for only one hour studying their behaviors, taking photos as well as enjoying them praying on fruitful tress. Not only gorillas that can be seen but other primate species can also be seen during the tracking such as black and white colobus monkey, Angolan colobus monkey, owl-faced monkey, the white- bearded L’hoest’s monkey, the large troops of the acrobatic Angolan colobus monkey and various species of birds

Canopy walk:

This activity is regarded as one of the most interesting activities enjoyed by many tourists at the park. It provide a dizzying platform where visitors get chance to be at the ‘’eye to eye’’ level with different species of primates and bird species. The canopy walk consists of bridges between trees in the canopy of a forest mostly linked up with platforms inside or around the trees. It is a walkway of 40 meters above the ground level, and 0 meters long above a steep deep valley

Cultural walk:

This is regarded as a very interesting activity, interacting with the local community as they reveal their talents in singing, dancing and drama, how they make fire, how women make weaves, and hunting skills among other. Most especially to those who are interested in learning more about the behaviors of the local people this activity is so rewarding to them.

Bird watching

Birds are in plenty at Nyungwe forest national park, so those interested in bird watching are gifted with over 300 species of birds. This activity can be done either during day or in the evening. Bird species to see include, shoebill stock, great blue turacco, a stunning created bird as well as migrant birds attracted by seasonal fluctuations in the water levels among others. Rwanda is considered as a birders paradise
